• We've added categories to the site. These are completely optional, and geared more towards UMS-style maps. Right now the limitation is 3 categories per map.

Anyways, I wanted to take this opportunity to get feedback on the current list of categories. You can see the list on the submit page here: http://nibbits.com/sc/maps/submit/

Are there any generic categories that you feel should be added?

Are there any categories that should be removed or renamed?

  • Thanks for the categories update! I have applied the AoS tag to my BattleShips Pro map series.

I would add a Mini-Game category (and/or possibly merge puzzle games and hide and seek into this new category).

  • Could you give me some good examples of "Mini-games". Hide and seek I think of Tree Tag, or Kodo Tag. Puzzle I think of things like mazes/etc.

  • wagi, simply go to a map, and click "Edit" (its at the top, next to details, right by the maps name). This will submit the edit as pending, and requires a moderators approval unless you are the owner of that map. Once approved you gain 3 XP for each edit.

  • Please add a Civilization category, then I can organize all the various versions of Civilization I have and share them on here where someone could find them all if they wanted too.

Other category suggestions are: World War II, World War 1, Diplomacy, and LOTR.

That's way too specific. The only reason DotA got a category is the massive number of people that play a wide variety of DotA-style maps.

Tags are ideal for what you want.

I'm going to have to agree. There may be a better way to categorize them, but I don't think the term "Civilization" quite fits.

  • Well I only suggested them as I use those categories to help organize my own maps. I have 14 unique versions of Civilization (different styles) and then another 75 Civilization versions that I consider outdated.
92 unique World War 2 versions and 102 outdated versions.
23 unique World War 1's and 44 outdated versions.
    71 unique Diplomacy's and 150 outdated versions.
159 unique LOTR's and 92 outdated versions (not fully sorted)

Anyway I am just saying those are kinda big categories of maps I have and it would be pretty hard for people to find them all, though I guess if there tagged properly its not as hard. For now I just put the Civilization maps tagged under Strategy but I have thousands of maps I could tag under that..so maybe its a bit too broad I dunno?

  • A lot of those are just themes instead of actual gameplay types.

  • I guess you could say WW2 and WW1 are themes, but Diplomacy is definitely a gameplay type/style. LOTR also is to an extent (Make castles, get lots of generic troops and start with some heroes to use). I would argue Civilization is also a gameplay type although the different Civilizations haev enough gameplay differences I suppose it might not be broadly defined enough?

  • Something to think about:

If you had to index all Starcraft maps optimally with at most 15 category links, what would those 15 categories be? You have to keep in mind:
    1) coverage rates (% of people who find what they want in a category, as opposed to those who don't find categories useful)
    2) distribution (no category is too broad or too narrow relative to the others, in terms of popularity)

Notice that it is about "people" and not "maps" - the total number of maps in a given genre/category is completely irrelevant, much like Google does not care how many websites are on the internet - only how popular they are (via PageRank).

  • I didn't realize the cutoff was at 15, Diplomacy maps have been popular for years though. Rarely do I log on battle.net and not see a diplomacy map of some sort up for host. The total number of maps in a category sometimes indicates that categories popularity (IE everyone likes whatever type of maps so everyone keeps making different ones). I'm just saying I've seen a lot more diplomacy and diplomacy style maps (you could argue LOTR; Civilization fit under this) than I have seen Dota. If people are hosting maps more they are likely more popular.

Is there any way on the tags to find out how many maps under a tag it takes to get a tag up on the general list of tags. I noticed the boldness/size has to do with how many maps are tagged but wondered what the formula was for the rest of it.

  • Temple Siege is a DotA-style map.

But I'm serious, come up with your own set of 15 categories. Who knows, it might be better than what we currently have ;)

  • I could see diplomacy as possibly being a fit. We don't have a restriction on the number of categories, but azala is correct in the sense that they should be someone targeted categories, but not necessarily very specific.

  • Naming 15 categories off the top of my head, most of these are probably pretty vague, but getting too specific won't let lots of maps get into categories.

Action (would fall under almost all games)
Horror (House Haunted, The Thing, etc)
Adventure (A game with RPG elements, LOTR)
    Strategy (Diplomacy, Civilization, etc)
    Melee (Regular Starcraft maps)
    Puzzle (puzzle solving, Tetris, etc)
    Survival (Zombies, open ended category)
    Defence (Sunken Tower Defence, etc)
    Role-playing(Any role playing game)
    Vehicle(Driving test, vehicle oriented)
    Sports(games with sports)
    Movies(not games, mini movies :p)
Hide and Seek(Hide and seek, tree tag w/e)
    Miscellaneous(any other game)
Party game( Mini game parties wooo)

These are the game categories I thought of.

Thanks for the info, it seems you have a good eye for variety. My comments:
    1. Action and Misc. are way too broad. You can assume Misc. is a subset of "uncategorized".
    2. Vehicle is too narrow (for SC maps)
    3. Definitely needs a "Arena" (dota-like and loosely related games) category
    4. Could use a Board Game category (Stratego, Chess, Monopoly, etc.) - there's more variety here than you might expect on SC.
    5. Could use a "Micro Control" category (LOTS of micro-control type games hosted)
    6. Could use a "Bounds" category as well, same reason.
    7. Adventure overlaps too much with RPG. What one would ordinarily call an Adventure game in console/PC gaming is often labeled an RPG in SC.
    8. Minigames are pretty much dominated by one map (Minigame Party). There are others but they can fall into other categories.
    9. Horror is overlapped completely by Survival and RPG.

    So how about this:
    1. Melee (Regular Starcraft maps)
    2. Bounds (any obstacle course)
    3. Strategy (Diplo/civ, and other games involving long-term strategic thinking)
    4. Puzzle (puzzle solving, Tetris, etc)
    5. Survival (Zombies, open ended category)
    6. Defence (Sunken Tower Defence, etc)
    7. Role-playing (Any role playing game)
    8. Sports (games with sports)
    9. Movies (not games, mini movies :p)
    10. Hide and Seek (Hide and seek, tree tag w/e)
    11. Board Games (Stratego, Monopoly, etc)
    12. Micro Control (vulture control, rine control, etc.)
    13. Arena (Temple Siege, Storm the Fort, StarQuest, etc)

...and you can have a couple of wildcards, like splitting one of the above categories if it is too broad. (the 15 limit is entirely arbitrary, it just seems to be a good number based on what categories are supposed to do)

  • Here's my shot at a list, though looking at the above some of that looks pretty good too.

Altered SC Maps (Starcraft with some extreme gameplay changes--UMS Style).
    Bounds
Cat N Mouse (Alternately this could also go under Tag & Dodge Maps)
Deathmatch (Kill People, Duels, MTG, Etc.)
Defense Maps (The kind where units are coming from wherever and you have to keep them from reaching the end of the map).
    Games (non Sport ones)
Madnesses (Your units keep spawning and you keep killing other guys stuff)
    Movies (Just watch maps..)
    Diplomacy (Could include Civilization)
    Protect Maps (Protect the Whatever...)
Simulation (Civil War, Civilization, Colonization, Diplomacy, Dynasty Warriors, Fall of Rome, LOTR, Napoleon, Rise of Rome, Star Trek, Star Wars, Troy, Wheel of Time, WW1, WW2, WW3, etc.)
Sports (Based on actual sports, the fictional ones would be games)
    RPGs
    Tactical
    Tag and Dodge Stuff
    Team Fortress & Sniper Stuff
    Vs Comps

These are all actual categories I use in organizing my own maps...of course I have a lot more specific ones but I stuck with some of the more general ones for this since we seem to be want general categories as long as there not too general. My thought is we should want to be specific enough that no one map really fits under more than 3 categories since 3 is the max you can assign.

  • We definitely need to add a Melee map category, this would hopefully keep melee maps from clogging the already large Strategy section and make it easy for people to find melee maps on nibbits. Currently its a big pain to search for melee maps. I know we have the melee vs custom map type thing but as far as I know you can't search by those?

  • And a Games Category... how does the Warcraft 3 section get a Mini-Games category and we can't get a games Category for starcraft? So many types of games that are starcraft maps including mini-games, board games, racing, sims and a host of others.
