Just wanted to let everyone know that there's going to be a large number of new StarCraft maps. We're uploading some personal archives which should add a lot of missing older maps.
This just created quite a few duplicate maps, from my initial brief scanning, and was it really necessary to upload all of those maps that came with Starcraft or Brood War as I see a lot of those in this batch. Maybe next time they can sort our the generic maps.

It shouldn't create duplicates (it still is doing the checksum on maps). The sc/bw initial maps are just kind of a bonus I guess. I'd say it's useful to have them as they can be rated/etc.
I think I'd also like to implement some kind of "based on" system, which could be useful for that as well.

I still have a ways to go (81 more pages :P) but there are definitely some duplicates. Granted there were plenty in the 8,000+ maps you had up before this. A lot of maps I saw and searched my map database and realized I had downloaded them the week before from your site (well not a lot but a few).
I'll try and note some more examples as I go through, I posted some from earlier in another thread--not sure if you removed duplicates there or not--or if it is even really a concern. I figure though with so many maps it helps to at least eliminate duplicates if we are going to have a bunch of outdated versions of maps up.
Oh yea, for some reason when I try to post in (this thread only) I have to use mozilla firefox, my IE has some weird error and crashes. Could just be on my end but thought I'd mention it anyway. IE also seems to be counting two downloads for every time I click on a map to download it. I have noticed this as pages with no downloads after I dl the maps I need off it and refresh the ones I dl'ed just increased by two downloads. I think this has to do with IE asking me if I am sure I want to download or some such.
AHHH the problem is the map filenames. Grr. Now the question is raised, how do we deal w/ that? I guess I could verify map name OR map filename, but that's tricky.
Or you could just delete duplicates as people notice them. Presumably we will gradually notice all the bad duplicates (IE like 4 times the same map) and you can get rid of them that way. I'm sure I will find a lot more in the 87 pages (and growing) I have left to check :P.

Not a good idea to rely on manual dupe-killing, considering mass-archive uploading is likely to be done again.
All it suggests is that capitals are .3 KB less. DL them both and then tell me if they look like different maps or even version to you---there not.
Cramer, can you not do that right away? I have 65 more pages to go through and if you push everything back a month it will be a pain to find where I left off.
EDIT: Nevermind you already did... I just found my place... only five pages back :D.

If the map sizes are different I would suspect SOMETHING is different.
If SC really doesn't differentiate between file name case then I will happily change Nibbits to not care. Right now it checks for a key on checksum + map_filename. If there's a match it doesn't recreate the map.
EzTerixSo for the users right now is the worst time to submit a map? It'll be washed away basically and never be heard from again :p.
Yeah that actually points to a bigger problem - once a map is off the featured/top10/new lists, it is difficult to get it the views it deserves.
In theory, reviews help bridge the credibility gap, explaining why the map is worth playing. So what you could do is get someone, like a friend or fan of the game, to review and rate your map, and then nominate it [link="http://www.nibbits.com/sc/forums/6/view/177/"]here[/link].
Well I just finished going through all the new maps. Slightly interesting batch I ended up picking up another 1,038 Maps to add to my collection with the rest either being stuff I already had or really crappy versions of stuff I had/maps that weren't worth downloading (my personal opinion only of course).
Grand total: 17,798 Starcraft-Brood War Maps
15,843 -- Non Crappy (or unsorted) Maps
My most notable category that increased were my Battlcraft maps which went up from 100 maps to 467 maps.
Hopefully I can keep organizing my maps more and whittle it down to the best of each version and only good maps. A which point I would try to get them up somewhere or possibly incorporated into Nibbits. Oh and I should note my unsorted maps are actually all in appropriate folders except for 377 of them in my download folder so it's more quality sorting that is left to do :D.
Yea, I would think the main issue would be a lot of people downloading the same stuff again to get the last few new whatever maps. Actually it's a lot easier to just sort through the maps page by page than dl them all at once and try to figure out where to put them (with the exception of stuff that it's obvious where it goes since you already have a bunch of maps of that category). I know this from experience sorting out a few people's map folder torrents. More useful might be an option to download the maps that were uploaded by date. And then when that date selection download was picked it would update all the maps uploaded on that date in the pack by one on their download count.
azalaYeah, I mentioned somewhere (either on IM or here) that the site would benefit from explicit user-generated lists similar to Amazon's Listmania.
If user generated lists are used I would suggest perhaps using the tags, or maybe just categories. But then maybe that is too much work to code--not sure. Anyway with the search function you should be able to find anything you've heard of easily enough.

One example is this version of Temple Siege which was uploaded twice Sept. 8th:

Here's another: Dungeon Raiders, this one was up before the recent upload and is now up twice.

Should you guys put a sign on the frontpage or something to postpone submissions or what.
Actually, the worst time would have been to put it up September 7th. The map flood seems to have stopped for now though.

Capitals don't matter to starcraft but apparently do to nibbits.
I'm actually gonna fix the maps that were done this way and push their date back a bit. Will do the same for future map additions done like this.
There were 2700 so far and they've been tweaked to show they were uploaded a month ago (best solution I have :)
Actually they're kinda plainly different sizes entirely, suggesting two different maps.
All it suggests is that capitals are .3 KB less. DL them both and then tell me if they look like different maps or even version to you---there not.

We originally had something called "Map Packs" which would allow you to pick N maps and it'd zip them up like a playlist.
I had previously killed the feature as it was underused, and presented some issues.
I'm thinking about re-adding it back, but as a simple list of the maps, rather than an actual zip file.
