Lately I've been protecting my maps, just like how a lot of the maps here on Nibbits are protected. A downside to protecting the map is the minimap preview won't show up (since the file can't be loaded). This seems to be a bit of a disadvantage as far as number of downloads go. Maybe people suspect that a map without a preview is a fake, or a nudie, or something? Maybe they just like to get a better idea of what a map's like? Either way... it might be nice to be able to upload an image capture of the minimap or something.
It's not just "protected" maps it's also compressed maps, although one could say compression achieves the same thing as protection.
Actually, none of the previews have been showing up for anything I've uploaded in a long while (nor empty test maps uploaded by others).
Ya I believe something changed recently, and we've yet to get the map reader updated for it. Hopefully it will be fixed soon :)
Can you re-parse all the maps uploaded since whatever date it stopped generating thumbnails, or do we have to reupload?
I don't have any compression or protection on any of my maps, but I will be waiting for the system to be back to 100% before putting up anymore RPG versions, which I'm stalled and procrastinating on anyway. The crazy detailed terrain is 90% of the appeal of this map.
You won't have to reupload. They'll be fixed as soon as we fix the parser.
maps can also be unprotected. protection is completely useless.

Not true. Currently mapper Esponeo has developed a new protection that has not been beaten by any program.
Most of the little kiddies who would steal a map and slap their name on it aren't exactly swift enough, by virtue of thinking they could get away with it, to get around most map protection schemes.
Even just making a map with functions outside the scope of standard Staredit makes a lot of theft problems go away.
But most of all, a map that is known to be by a particular author is going to get noticed as stolen, so posting your maps on nibbits or other sites is actually the best protection you can get.
Yea, that's why I protect maps, a basic protection that can be unprotected will at least keep little kids away. I think most people would rather just make suggestions to you on a map if you have contact information avaiable on it than go through the trouble of trying to rip your map. There aren't a lot of skilled map rippers. It's nice that most maps can be looked at as many map makers are lone gone and now if you run across a map with serious glitches you can hopefully fix it all up (while keeping original person's credit and just adding credit for what you did).
Uploading maps on sites helps of course.
Excalibur, I hope your not promoting one of the protections that doesn't allow anyone with a MAC to play and crashes the game in briefing if you have one player on a MAC in game. There are a couple "un-publically broken" protectors but most of them have some nasty side effects for b.net playability (IE Mac users won't like them so much :P).
No, Esponeo's protection does not disclude Macs from play. It uses a method containing an extra blank scenario.chk within the SCX, which is further hex edited so that it cannot be opened with WinMPQ. Since no unprotection programs are equipped to deal with a 0kb scenario.chk, it crashes them immediately.

It is not kept secret, it has been created, and I have a map using it in my possession. However due to the dual scenario.chk, it cannot be uploaded by conventional map databases either.

1. The method has not been detailed specifically. We know generally how it's done, but I cannot replicate it personally.
2. The map, I could upload to an external host if you wish to try and crack it.
3. No program can do or undo this, it has to be done by hand, see 1.
So it's a method, and not a program. What you should have done in your initial post was add a link to wherever this new protection was discussed.
Which is why I made the “X is developing Y..." remark. Rumors lacking usable information are completely worthless, and probably counterproductive - the way you worded it, it could have been interpreted as pure braggadocio. That's all I'm trying to say.
It is not being discussed anywhere, in fact, very few have even figured out as much as I've said here. The reason being is as soon as the final part (The hex editing) becomes public, someone can create a program to easily reverse the process.
To be clear, Esponeo isn't telling anyone anything, but he has given a few people, myself included, maps with the protection to try and crack as a way to test his method. The only reason we know as much as we do about it is due to this testing.
Where can we get that unbeatable map protector?

It has to be done manually, by hand. There is no program to do it for you.
i hope it gets fixed.
